Mangonui
The Doubtless Bay region encompasses a large area of the Far North, approximately 70 kilometres of coastline with lots of seaside towns and beaches including Mangonui the historic fishing village with café’s, craft shops and the best Fish and Chips!
There are wonderful safe white sandy beaches, Coopers Beach, Cable Bay, Taipa, Tokerau Beach, Rangiputa and Whatuwhiwhi to name a few, where you can swim, surf, dive, fish and water ski plus much more.
It is a beautiful area, very peaceful with a subtropical climate, the water is crystal clear and the fish are plentiful. There are a variety of excellent restaurants, golf courses and a great range of accommodation.
Doubtless Bay was named by Captain James Cook in 1769, as he went past was recorded as saying ‘doubtless a bay’, there in the name.
Mangonui was once a busy trading port dating back to the early 1800’s when it was a whaling base and a hub for the export of Kauri timber.
It is still a port of entry to New Zealand where commercial fishing boats off load their catches at the wharf in this historic and scenic village. Just around the corner is the picturesque Mill Bay with its yacht anchorage overlooked by Rangikapiti Pa. From this Pa site you can have a beautiful view over Mangonui Harbour on one side to the whole of Doubtless Bay on the other.
Further north you come to Karikari Peninsula with its array of wonderful safe beaches and not far from the Carrington Club golf course and the Karikari Estate Vineyard and Winery. At the tip of the peninsula lies Matai Bay – perfect for a camping holiday. To the western side of the peninsula lies Rangiputa, which looks out over the Rangaunu harbour. It has a small settlement with a beautiful setting on the harbour with white sands and turqouise waters.
To the east of the peninsula is Tokerau Beach, the longest on the peninsula and stretching for 18kms. It is a surf caster's paradise and great digging for shellfish.
There is much more – Taipa, Cable Bay and Coopers Beach all have lovely safe swimming beaches.
Surrounded by beautiful scenery, olive groves, vineyards and views of the Pacific Ocean.
